alistair @badmintonwycombe.co.uk 01494 436200 Assistant Manager for Badminton Wycombe
Position now filled... If you feel you could be our new Assistant Manager or if you would like to discuss the role further, please contact Alistair Jones [email protected] or phone the centre for an informal chat on 01494 436200 After a long period away from the Centre, as a result of the Covid restrictions, it was possible in June for Abby Kumar to be presented with a specially made award following his recent relocation to Derbyshire. This presentation, was made by the Chairman, Jeff Brydon, in recognition of the outstanding contribution Abby has made to not only Wycombe Badminton Centre, but Badminton as a whole. His many years of voluntary work, both as a coach and latterly as an official have taken Abby around the world, where his expertise in line judging has been in demand, in both an organisational as well as a teaching capacity. Abby officiated at the London Olympic games in 2012, as well as many World Championships and high profile tournaments on a global scale. Abby was a pioneering influence when he contributed to junior club ”Booker Tigers” , where weekends were devoted to promoting and developing junior players. He was instrumental in gaining Performance Centre status, an accreditation from the governing body Badminton England, which is still flourishing today, producing many top England juniors as well as boasting three senior England internationals. All of these achievements would not have been possible without Abby’s dedication to the Centre. Indeed in 2006 he was responsible for overseeing the project management of a new floor in the hall and a complete refurbishment. Today the hall at the Centre is still regarded as the best practice facility in the country and this is due in no small part to the exacting standards instilled by Abby Kumar. In recognising Abby’s outstanding contribution, the current Centre manger Alistair jones, described him as “a unique figure in the sport of Badminton, whose generous time and expert overview is sort and acted upon by the decision makers at the highest level”. As the current Vice President of Badminton England, Abby still contributes to committees nationally, and Wycombe Badminton Centre is very proud to have been able to acknowledge his outstanding contribution to the development of Badminton . Jeff Brydon, Chairman of Badminton Wycombe, presenting Abby Kumar with a specially commissioned commemorative award in recognition of his hard work for the Centre.
Important changes following the release from lockdown
On Monday, the Government announced the release from the legal restrictions of the Covid-19 lockdown but that we should all still proceed with some degree of caution. The Centre is pleased to announce the following changes as to how we operate from this coming Monday, July 19:
We believe these changes are a reasonable balance between what the removal of legal requirements permit and what will continue to help minimise the risk to our Members and Staff given the confined spaces at the Centre whilst not on the Courts, and the ongoing pandemic. Whilst we all hope that, as time progresses, we will be able to continue to remove restrictions, this remains dependent on Government and Badminton England guidance. The Committee will continue to keep the situation under review and make further updates based on the appropriate guidance and conditions. It with much sadness that Wycombe Badminton Centre has learned of the recent passing of Dave Dovey.
Dave was a long standing Committee Member for both the local league as well as the Management Committee at the Centre. He was the founder of Revelations BC, a Club formed from his contacts at the College where he worked (now Bucks New University). He tirelessly submitted league reports to the local paper and members remember fondly his unbiased and fair accounts of all matches. He famously learned Italian and offered his coaching skills to the Italian Badminton Association, which epitomises his generous nature and love of the sport. Indeed, until recently, Dave would still call the Centre for clarification on new rules of the sport, or scoring changes, such was his genuine interest in Badminton. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him at the Centre and remembered with much affection. Dave’s funeral service will be held at the St Margaret’s Church, Tylers Green (HP10 8NY) at 11.00am on Monday 12th July. Current rules permit only 30 in church, so if more turn up some may have to stay outside. Hopefully the weather may be kind but better bring a brolly, just in case. After this, Dave will be buried at the Cock Lane cemetery 12 midday and there will be a wake at the Old Queens Head pub (HP10 8EY opposite the church) at 1pm. Same attendance rules apply at the pub but if the weather is ok we can gather in any number outside but if it’s raining, only 30 will be allowed inside and have to be seated and served at the table. No flowers please but if you wish to make a donation, Dave’s preferred charities are; Cancer Research; Help the Aged; and British Heart Foundation. If you make a donation please make it in Dave’s name so they know where it has come from. Return to the Rule of 6 May 17th & Further Release From Lockdown
The Government has announced that they are continuing to follow their release from lockdown pathway and Badminton England's provisional guidance is that from May 17, 2021, Indoor Badminton may be played by Adults (singles & doubles) by people from different households up to a maximum of 6 people. We are therefore delighted to be able to offer our members the ability to book courts for up to 6 people for singles & doubles play from Monday, May 17th. Please note:
We are launching our new Booking System as of Tuesday, June 1, 2021. It has several key advantages over the old system, which we hope will make things easier for you. These include:
How to Access the New System You can find our new booking system via the "Book a Court" menu option on our website badmintonwycombe.co.uk (as of Tuesday 1st June). There, you will be greeted by the new Calendar view showing you court availability and the options to register as a new user or login to the system. Registering for the New System If you joined as a member of the Centre after March 1st, 2020, you should have received an email from the system before Monday 19th April, providing you with a username and password. If you joined after March 1st, 2020 and haven't receive such a welcome email, please do contact the Centre and we will sort this out for you. If you need to re-join the Centre, as you haven't paid for membership since before March 1st, 2020, then you will need to click on the "Register as a new user" link, complete the form and make the £20 annual membership payment. Once you have registered as a new member and made the payment, you will immediately be able to log into the new system and make court bookings - no more waiting for us to process your application. Please note:
Once you have logged into the system using your email address and password, you can navigate to the date that you wish to book a court (the usual 9-day advanced booking limit still applies) to see court availability. To book a court, click on the "Add Booking" button that is above the calendar view You will then be asked to select:
You will also be asked to enter the details of the additional players with whom you will be playing as well as being able to select the option for "Pay Day Membership" if that person(s) is not a member and you wish to include the Day Membership fee(s) in your total booking costs, meaning you don't have to pay Day Membership fees at reception, helping you to get onto court quicker. Players will still be able to pay for Day Membership at reception by card, if you wish. Please do enter the other players' email addresses as they will be sent emails about the booking - please see later in this email about QR codes. You can then add more bookings if you so wish. Once you have made all the court bookings you wish, you will need to go to the "Checkout" button that is to the right of the "Add Booking" button. You will then be shown all the bookings you have made, as well as any Day Memberships you are paying for and be asked to provide your payment card details to pay for all the bookings that you are wishing to make, plus the Day Memberships requested. QR Codes For each court booking, you as the booker and each of the players that you have registered against each court booking will receive an email informing with the details of the booking and a unique QR code. That QR code can then be scanned at reception to check you into the Centre, speeding up the process for getting you on court. The email and QR code is unique to that particular booking and that particular person - so once it is scanned, it cannot be used again. We hope to have the QR code reader up at reception in the coming days. If you have any difficulties If you should encounter any difficulties, please do get in contact with us and we will do everything we can to help. Whilst we have done our very best to test all possible uses of the system, we know that we might have missed something and that it will take a little time for us, as well as you, to get used to the new system. So, if there are any issues, we hope that you will be patient with us whilst we learn how to become experts on it. Tier 3 places further restrictions on what badminton may be played according to government and Badminton England guidance.
