talkback

Talkback is a session at Wycombe Badminton Centre for adults with learning disability and autism; more information can be found on their website:
https://talkback-uk.com/blog/badminton-a-game-changing-success/

Talkback has developed a strong partnership which joined their knowledge in learning disability and Wycombe Badminton's open mind and keen to learn approach. They work hard to break down those barriers for people accessing sport.
So, why do Talkback value Wycombe Badminton's approach so much and why that has helped to break down those barriers?
  •  We get to know each individual and builds a relationship with them as a player. Never assuming that someone isn’t capable, always listening to advice and feedback. Forever exploring new ways of doing things.
  • Welcoming approach, we lend racquets and shoes. This helps their members feel comfortable and confident in a community sports facility.
  • Games based approach that introduces participants to the skills of the game in a fun and inclusive way. See photos attached. Breaking each part of the game down, making it accessible with a fun game. E.g. using paddle bats, nets, giant shuttles, balloons. Gradually building layers of skill that enables players to start playing with a racquet and hitting the shuttle over the net. This approach coupled with lots of shuttle feeding and repetition really really works. Its not about the winning, it’s about taking part.
  • We have reached out to the learning disability community, working not just with Talkback but with other providers. We hosted the Para-festival for Badminton England in September which showcased the extraordinary progress our members have made.
  • Talkback have secured funding so they can access more sessions and build on their skills and Alistair (WBC) is more than generous with his coaching time.
Talkback have seen some extraordinary progress in their members, who love to play and continually delight and surprise us with their ability. However, this is not just about badminton, its also about moving more, confidence, communications skills – listening and speaking, building friendships and people feeling good about themselves. Its great too for other players to see our groups, making connections with them and encouraging each other, increasing the diversity at the club.
Its really fabulous work and there is much still to do to build on...
